Tim Burton's style is whimsical, simple and slightly spooky. His simple monochromatic style allows students to focus on the subject matter rather than the expression of color. The whimsical nature of his characters provides the opportunity for students to use their imagination and explore a variety of facial expressions.

Start with the basic sketch. I drew two hills in and kept the trees very stick-like. The branches in this illustration start super high on the tree. Make sure to thicken the base of the trees and get thinner as the branches go further out. It's like drawing the letter "Y" over and over. I filled in the hills with loose, sketchy, broken lines.

As time went on, though, Burton's style changed—it became less edgy, less dark, less gothic. Even when he did make a return to form, like with Dark Shadows and Alice in Wonderland, it almost felt like Tim Burton was trying to make a "Tim Burton film", but wasn't quite getting it right. However, films like Big Eyes, Big Fish, and the newly released Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children.

The goal of the final project was to imagine what they would like like if they became a Tim Burton character. They could only use black and white colored pencils to create their projects; they also had to use correct facial proportions, and some shading here and there. They really blew me away with the self portraits they created.

Extremely diverse and prolific, he uses different techniques and material - crayons, paints (oil, acrylic, watercolours), markers, pens, glitters and pastels… And with this he succeeds in creating whole worlds. His characters are born on paper, marginal and touching, misunderstood and passionate just like their creator. Frankenweenie, Tim Burton

By Chris Heckmann on August 15, 2021 Tim Burton is a filmmaker with a style so unique that we've come to regard his works — and those who replicate them — as Burtonesque. And we see the Burtonesque in every facet of his films: writing, lighting, music, characters and of course, production design.
