This supercharged BMW S14 inline-four has been with the seller since 2010, and was installed in his 1988 BMW M3 track car before being removed for a rebuild by Vintage Sports & Restoration, LLC of Bow, New Hampshire in 2017.

The BMW S14 is a DOHC four-cylinder petrol engine which was used in the E30 M3, E30 320iS, and E36 318i Super Touring. It is based on the BMW M10 block and the cylinder head from the six-cylinder BMW S38 with two cylinders removed. [1] The direct successor to the S14 was the S42 based on the M42 engine.

The 2.3-liter BMW S14 inline-four features dual overhead camshafts and two throttle assemblies with two butterfly plates each. The catalyst-equipped S14B23 produced 192 horsepower and 170 lb-ft of torque when new. The black "BMW M Power" finish on the valve cover is worn.

The BMW S14 engine has its strengths but those strengths have never been said to be low end torque and a flat broad power curve. Traditionally these little 4 cylinders had to be driven at very high rev ranges in order to make horsepower and be competitive.
