Goldstream Park is home to the annual salmon spawning run every fall and the rest of the year is just a wonderful world of centuries old Douglas fir and western red cedars. Several of the huge trees are estimated to be over 600 years old and you find some reaching to the sky and others laying dramatically along the forest floor.

Best time to visit. During the fall, from mid-late October to late December, the yearly salmon run takes place on Vancouver Island. One of the prime locations on the island to witness the salmon run is Goldstream Provincial Park. For nine weeks or so, about 30,000 salmon migrate from the ocean and swim upstream the Goldstream River to spawn in.

Goldstream Salmon Runs from Mid-Late October to Early December Every fall millions of Pacific salmon fight their way up the streams, creeks and rivers of the Pacific northwest working their way back to the their home pools where they were originally spawned. Here, they will spawn a new generation of salmon then die.

What does it mean to see the salmon run? There are five Pacific salmon species indigenous to British Columbia - chinook, chum, sockeye, coho, and pink. BC is also home to kokanee salmon, a form of 'landlocked' sockeye that do not migrate to the sea.

The annual salmon run starts from late October through December, with thousands of salmon making the arduous journey from the Pacific Ocean to the Finlayson Arm of the Saanich Inlet. The salmon draw people, bears and Bald Eagles to the park as they struggle up the Goldstream River to spawn in the streams in which they were born three to four years earlier.
